Ultimately, it seems to come down to, can I do what I want, in the way I want to do it? I'm looking forward to what else I learn.īut it's interesting that I've learned how these small things matter to me. After all, most families start with people who are unrelated (with exceptions, of course). ![]() The same applies to anyone who had formative years with a family. We sometimes marvel at how the decisions and events of our ancestors led to the existence, influences and realities of our own selves. But the second is the adoptive family, it is also their tree, because they grew up influenced by the history, the character, the traits, the personalities, the socio-economics, many influences of that fostering or adoptive family. I believe those who grew up in a family through fostering or adoption have two family trees. So, it's funny, they are not the main reasons why people choose software.Īlso important to me will be how I can include my foster siblings. But there is no option to include that in Family Tree Maker. So, I did a report from myself to my furthest namesake along my own surname.īut I wanted to show their spouses as well. Both programs have this wonderful feature, for myself, and as gifts for those who have some interest in family history. The second small thing? The Relationship Reports, showing your relationship to an ancestor by showing every ancestor on that line. What I don't understand is why they both don't just let you choose a colour off of a colour wheel. With RootsMagic, I did, and still have 4 left over if I discover another major region or anything else I want to colour code. The problem? Well, I identified 8 primary regions of the world for my family tree, but with FTM, I didn't have enough colours left to choose. This colour coding makes life easier so that, when I'm looking for records in Ireland, for example, I can easily see which individuals might have records in that region. That left me with 6, which I wanted to use for regions. And also corny, yes I used green for the Irish). Pretty small thing in the overall program, eh? With FTM, I used blue for my male line, pink for my female line (corny yes I know, but easy to see at a glance. FTM has 8 colours to choose, RootsMagic has 14. ![]() ![]() I have two of them.įirst, the colour coding options. ![]() Sometimes it's really small things that make you choose. Honestly, I think I like using both of them. Recently bought Family Tree Maker 2019, already had Roots Magic 7.
